she asked me to tell her a story and i tried.
she only saw honesty
through her eyes
and wondered why everyone else lied.
"all i am is scars, bruises,
empty-nest bones reaching out
to separate from bullpen muscles
because being alone is better than being imprisoned."
and i told her
that she was the ocean and i was the stars
but she said if i were the stars
she must be a blackhole
(she
still
doesn't get it).
"i would give up all my light
to feed your love-starved soul.
you are the reason stars shine
and flowers bloom
and i will give the world to you
with words
and show you
the everything beautiful that is you."
"i am the reason stars fade
and flowers are cut
for those that are loved, such as i;

beloved,
i am the reason
flowers die
and why you choose to see beauty in death
and pain
is beyond me--"
"why do you ask for my stories?"
and with a hesitant heart
she smiled
and pulled closed the blinds
(her ocean eyes
were begging for release)
"because i'm desperate for them to change
from how much i'm killing you
to how much i fill you with life;
because even though it scares you when i say
i'd die without you
i mean i couldn't live without you
and i don't consider breathing as the definition of life
because it's love."
and when she flicked the switch that night
i burned out too.
